From Idea to Industry: Barry Bowen’s Journey to China to Bring Shadey to Life

Turning a simple holiday idea into a real, manufactured product takes far more than a sketch and a good idea.

For Barry Bowen, the journey behind Shadey Attachments eventually led thousands of miles from the UK to China, where meeting potential manufacturers face-to-face became a hugely important step in transforming Shadey from concept into a product ready for the global market.

From Poolside Idea to Professional Product Design

The idea for Shadey began with a problem most of us have experienced on holiday — trying to see a phone, tablet or Kindle screen in bright sunshine.

Once the concept was born, the next challenge was working out how to turn it into something that could actually be manufactured.

That’s where Simple Design Works came in.

We partnered with the experienced UK product design company to develop the original idea into a professionally engineered product. Their team understood the Shadey concept from the beginning and helped turn our early sketches into the detailed technical drawings, specifications and manufacturing information needed to move into production.

But having a finished design was only part of the journey.

We now needed to find the right company to actually make it.

Why Travel All the Way to China?

Finding a manufacturer isn’t simply about choosing the cheapest quotation.

For us, it was important to find a manufacturing partner capable of producing Shadey to the standard we expected, while still allowing us to keep the finished product affordable for customers.

Barry travelled to China with a shortlist of potential manufacturers and plenty of questions.

Rather than relying solely on emails, photographs and samples, the trip provided an opportunity to meet the people behind the factories, inspect manufacturing facilities and understand exactly how each business operated.

For a completely new product like Shadey, that face-to-face contact was invaluable.

Seeing Manufacturing First-Hand

Walking around factories and meeting manufacturing teams gave Barry a far better understanding of what would be involved in taking Shadey into full production.

It meant being able to discuss materials, tooling, product quality, assembly and production processes directly with the people who could ultimately be responsible for manufacturing thousands of Shadeys.

Just as importantly, the trip wasn’t only about machinery and production capacity.

We wanted to work with a company whose values felt right too.

The manufacturer we eventually chose stood out not only because of its ability to produce a quality product, but because of its strong business ethics and genuine care for its employees.

That mattered to us.

Shadey might be a fun, colourful holiday accessory, but behind every product are real people — from designers and engineers to manufacturers, assemblers and customers.

Finding a partner we felt comfortable working with was therefore every bit as important as finding the right manufacturing capability.

Bullet Trains, Chicken Feet and Christmas Lights

Of course, a business trip to China was always going to involve a few memorable moments along the way.

Barry experienced the speed and scale of China first-hand, including travelling on the famous Bullet Train, navigating unfamiliar cities and experiencing a completely different business culture.

Then there was the food.

Sampling chicken feet certainly became one of the more memorable culinary experiences of the trip!

And despite being thousands of miles from home, China also delivered one unexpected surprise — some of the most extraordinary Christmas light displays we had ever seen.

It turned what was already an important business trip into an unforgettable part of the Shadey story.

Finding the Right Manufacturing Partner

By the end of the trip, the goal had become much clearer.

We weren’t simply looking for someone who could manufacture a plastic accessory.

We were looking for a long-term partner who understood the importance of quality, consistency, communication and responsible manufacturing.

Meeting manufacturers in person allowed Barry to ask questions, see working environments for himself and build relationships that would have been much harder to establish from the UK.

Ultimately, that process led us to the manufacturing partner we felt was right for Shadey.

Turning Shadey Into a Real Product

There is something very different about seeing an idea move from a sketch on paper to a professionally engineered product.

The journey has involved design development, technical drawings, prototypes, tooling, manufacturing discussions and countless decisions along the way.

But travelling to China was one of those moments when everything began to feel very real.

What had once been a simple idea for a portable phone and tablet sun shade was now becoming a product that could be manufactured, packaged and enjoyed by customers around the world.

More Than Just a Phone Shade

Today, Shadey Attachments is designed to make using mobile devices outdoors more comfortable.

Whether you’re reading a Kindle beside the pool, scrolling on your phone at the beach or using your tablet on a sunny terrace, Shadey creates practical shade for your device when bright sunlight makes screens difficult to see.

But behind that simple idea is a much bigger story.

A poolside observation.

A hand-drawn sketch.

A professional UK design team.

A journey across China.

Factory visits.

Bullet trains.

Chicken feet.

And eventually, the manufacturing partnership needed to bring Shadey to life.

And that is all part of what makes the Shadey journey so special.
